Abstract: The RNA species of microRNAs represents an important component of post-transcriptional gene regulation. Herpes viruses, including the Epstein-Barr virus, encode their own microRNA genes, which play a relevant role in crucial cellular processes, including immune evasion, but also in the malignant transformation of host cells. Modern transcriptome analyses, including RNA sequencing, contribute significantly to the identification of these direct and indirect molecular regulatory relationships.
