Der Begriff des Tiefencues in der Wahrnehmungsforschung - eine historisch-systematische und empirische Untersuchung

Abstract

Ein zentraler und weit verbreiteter Terminus in der Forschungsliteratur zur Tiefenwahrnehmung ist der des Tiefencues. Trotz seiner weiten Verbreitung lassen sich jedoch auffallend wenige grundlagentheoretische Analysen zum logischen Status des cue-Konzeptes in der Wahrnehmungsforschung finden. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, diese theoretische Lücke zu füllen. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit werden anhand einer für die Analyse bedeutsamen Auswahl traditioneller Theorien der Tiefenwahrnehmung die historischen Vorbilder des aktuellen cue-Konzeptes herausgearbeitet. Es wird aufgezeigt, dass trotz zum Teil unterschiedlicher konzeptueller Einbettungen die logische Rolle der Tiefencues über die verschiedenen traditionellen Theorien mehr oder weniger unverändert bleibt und mit einem zentralen Problem verbunden ist, nämlich dem, dass in den Erläuterungen zur Funktion der Tiefencues dasjenige, was erklärt werden soll (eine Wahrnehmung von etwas), in mehr oder minder verborgener Form stets schon vorausgesetzt werden muss. Die aktuellen, dem Informationsverarbeitungsparadigma verpflichteten Formulierungen des Konzepts der Tiefencues sind Gegenstand des zweiten Teils der Arbeit. Anhand einer weiterführenden Auseinandersetzung mit den impliziten Voraussetzungen dieses Paradigmas kann auch hier das angesprochene Zirkularitätsproblem nachgewiesen werden. Im dritten Teil der Arbeit wird demonstriert, wie typischerweise das Konzept der Tiefencues im Rahmen wahrnehmungspsychologischer Forschung angewendet wird. Es zeigt sich, dass dieses Konzept zwar als Heuristik genutzt werden kann, um relevante und interessante empirische Ergebnisse zu Tage zu fördern, diese Ergebnisse aber aufgrund der mit den Tiefencues verbundenen theoretischen Probleme nicht verständlich gemacht werden können.

The term ‘depth cue’ is fundamental to and widely used in depth perception literature. Despite its prevalence, there is virtually no scholarship on the theoretical foundations and the coherence of the concept of a cue in vision science. The aim of the present dissertation is to fill this theoretical desideratum. In the first section of the thesis, the historical models of the current concept of a cue are identified by means of a relevant selection of traditional theories of depth perception. It is shown that, in spite of partially differing conceptual embeddings, the logical status of the depth cues remains to a greater or lesser extent unaltered across these traditional theories and, more importantly, is linked to a central conceptual problem, namely, that the explanations of the functioning of the depth cues always need to presuppose, in a more or less concealed way, that which is actually to be explained (i.e., a perception of something). The current information processing paradigm related characterizations of the concept of depth cues are the focus of the second section of the thesis. On the basis of a further examination of the implicit assumptions of this paradigm, the aforementioned problem of circularity is established here as well. In light of the preceding theoretical considerations, the third part of the thesis demonstrates, how the concept of depth cues is typically used in visual perception research. It is shown that drawing on this concept heuristically can yield relevant and interesting empirical results, yet these are shown to be ultimately incomprehensible due to the inherent theoretical problems of the concept of depth cues.
