This dissertation addresses the complex interplay of hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions at the molecular and submolecular level. Their spectroscopic signatures are calculated for ultrafast excited-state protonation phenomena in solution, small organic molecules and metabolites, and point-mutated amyloid β (1-40) fibrils. These systems contain hydrogen bonds and proton transfer pathways, which exhibit characteristic spectroscopic features. Using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations and quantum chemical calculations, the corresponding experiments could be successfully interpreted.
