Rocket propellants basically consist of an oxidizer and a fuel that are present in a polymeric binder matrix. Ammonium perchlorate (AP) is the state-of-the-art oxidizer that is used in propellant formulations. AP contains chlorine what forms hydrochloric acid when the propellant is burned. A candidate to replace AP is ammonium dinitramide. It is commercially available, but the crystals are very irregularly shaped so it is not ready for processing. The crystal shape has to be modified before ammonium dinitramide can be used. This work deals with the solvent crystallization of ammonium dinitramide and how it influences the crystal morphology. Cooling crystallization experiments were carried out under different process conditions using 1-propanol and 1-octanol as solvents. Supersaturation during the process was determined, the crystal shape and the thermal behaviour were characterized. Additionally to the experimental work, computer simulation methods were applied to ammonium dinitramide. The vacuum morphologies were calculated by using different simulation methods. By comparing the calculated morphologies to the crystals received from experiment, the relevant growth-faces were identified. To determine the influence of the solvent, the interaction energies of the solvents, the ammonium ion and the dinitramide ion with the important crystal faces were calculated by using force field methods. The crystal growth behaviour was described by taking the molecular structure of the crystal faces into account.
