The investigation of the mesomorphic properties of low molecular weight block molecules has become a field of increasing interest in the last few years. Rigid bolaamphiphiles with flexible lateral chains represent an important class of such compounds. The combination of amphiphilic self-organization with the driving force for parallel arrangement provided by rigid segments leads to the formation of novel exciting complex mesophase structures. The subject of this work is the synthesis of novel lateral substituted bolaamphiphilic molecules and the characterization of their liquid crystal properties by means of polarizing microscopy, DSC and X-ray scattering. The size of the lateral substituents as well as their chemical nature (alkyl, perfluoroalkyl and carbosilane units) was changed systematically. The synthesized compounds show a wide variety of new complex mesophases. Of particular interest are: columnar phases with cylinder structures, correlated and non-correlated lamellar phases as well as cubic phases with core-shell morphology.
