Abstract

Walter Glaesser (Gläßer) committed his 65th birthday at 07th of March 2009. He was professor in Hydrogeology at the University of Leipzig (since 1994) and Head of Department of Hydrogeology I in the Centre for Environmental Research Leipzig-Halle (1993 –2002) and scientific member of the Department Hydrogeology II of Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research Leipzig-Halle (2002–2009). Glaesser’s work has focused on investigations of hydrogeochemical processes in lignite and coppershale mining areas, in the long time pollution of groundwater in different depth in several industrial regions and in-situ groundwater regeneration. The system-analytical work covers chemical and isotopical analyses and the microbiological influence of groundwater on velocity of reactions in nature and in simulation labs. The results will be integrated in hydraulic and reaction models as help in other regions of the world. His results of investigations of the Department of Hydrogeology were documented in national and international journals, in book chapters and proceedings. Glaesser was reviewer for some international and national science journals. He consults in environmental questions by the German BMBF (Ministry of Research, Education and Sciences), UBA (Ministry of Environment) and federal Ministries of Environment in questions of mining and military damages.
