Author(s): Kurz, Miriam
Abstract: This paper examines a set of mosque lectures delivered by a German imam, outlining an ideal of Islamic masculinity which is based on the exercise of “practices of the self” (Foucault) working on a mental, bodily, and emotional level. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s understanding of morality, Aristotle’s conception of ethics and habitus formation, and Monique Scheer’s work on emotional practices, the article shows how this imam envisions his audience to achieve long-term changes in their emotional dispositions and thus to strengthen their faith and compliance with Islamic gender-specific norms of conduct. The article uses the lowering of the gaze as a central bodily technique and analyses it in its function for the overall project of ethical self-formation. I argue that the imam in question considers emotions as objects of conscious and reflexive teaching and training. Extending the existing scholarship on Islamic piety, the paper pays particular attention to the gendered nature of self-formation. It inquires into the relational dimension of masculinities within social power structures, while engaging with Raewyn Connell’s concept of “hegemonic
masculinity.”2017-01-01T00:00:00ZMehrsprachigkeit und Schrift : Betrachtungen zur Entwicklung von Schriftsystemen iranischer Sprachen im Sowjetischen MittelasienRzehak, LutzWeinreich, Matthiashttps://opendata.uni-halle.de//handle/1981185920/1080352023-06-24T02:16:25Z2003-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: Mehrsprachigkeit und Schrift : Betrachtungen zur Entwicklung von Schriftsystemen iranischer Sprachen im Sowjetischen Mittelasien

Abstract: The exhibition Beirut and the Golden Sixties: A Manifesto of Fragility highlights what the creator's argue is the fragility of the narrative around Beirut’s “Golden Age”, the period in the run up to Lebanon’s civil war. In this review, the exhibition genesis is traced and its display in Berlin’s Gropius Bau and MAC Lyon presented. A number of works are showcased to demonstrate how the curators construct the five sections that focus on place, body, form, politics and the Civil War. The review provides some contextualization for an exhibition of rich and diverse artworks and archival material that contain a multitude of stories.2022-01-01T00:00:00Z
