The section Preonanthus of the genera Pulsatilla includes the species Pulsatilla occidentalis, P. aurea, and P. alpina. Three molecular datasets (ITS, two fragments of the chloroplast spacer trnL-trnF) based on 367 individuals from 67 populations covering all species and morphotypes have been analyzed phylogenetically (neighbor-joining, maximum parsimony) and phylogeographically (F statistics, nested clade analysis). The ages of the phylogenetic nodes were dated applying the relative rate test and the penalized likelihood approach. The evolution of single characters was reconstructed with an advanced Mantel test and the PGLS (phylogenetic generalized least square) method using the molecular data and a given dataset with 24 morphological and ecological characters. The results point to the monophyly of both the section Preonanthus and the species complex. The ancestors of the section and the species complex originated in the mountains of Asia. The diversification of Preonanthus started 5.6 million years ago (mya) with the secession of P. occidentalis. The populations of Pulsatilla alpina and the Caucasian P. aurea developed separately around the Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary. The adaptive radiation of P. alpina began in Europe 1.4 mya, lasted until approximately 0.4 mya and resulted in the occurrence of three main lineages, the Alpicola clade, the Apiifolia clade, and the Alpina clade. The first European populations traces back to lime-tolerant and white flowering ancestors with finely dissected leaves. The adaptation of tolerance to calcareous soils evolved once at the beginning of the European radiation. The yellow flower color of the morphotype apiifolia is a derived trait. Hybridization and introgression among individuals of related morphotypes and among all main clades occur regularly. The morphotype ochroleuca is an emerging, polytopic hybrid, whereas the morphotype cottianaea is an ancient, stable hybrid lineage. The morphotypes montis-niveae and cyrnea are also of hybrid origin.eng
