The increasing complexity of electricity and gas networks, particularly due to volatile renewable energies, poses significant challenges in the areas of operation, control and optimization. These challenges necessitate the development of efficient computational methods to simulate models of the energy networks creating a basis for reliable operation and future planning. Model Order Reduction (MOR) techniques have emerged as powerful tools to simplify complex system models while preserving essential dynamics and characteristics. This habilitation thesis explores advanced MOR methodologies tailored to the unique requirements of a modern power and gas grid. The research presented in this thesis focuses on the development, analysis, and application of MOR techniques on mathematicaal systems motivated by the gas or power grid. Key contributions include the development of novel model order reduction algorithms formulation for parametric systems and hyperbolic partial differential equations. Further algorithmic developments are for switched systems as well as network systems. All mentioned characteristic are found in large scale energy networks. The thesis also introduces a vast framework for model order reduction on the gas grid including the model design as well as a software tool. in power grid simulation and optimization, several MOR techniques are proposed under different optimization questions. On the application side, this habilitation thesis contributes to the field of energy systems engineering by providing scalable and efficient MOR solutions that enhance the operational efficiency and reliability of integrated power and gas grids. The findings have significant implications for the development of advanced control strategies and the future design of sustainable and resilient energy networks.
