Abstract: The Internet’s BGP routing obscures routing and limits multipathing. Path-Aware Networking (PAN), like SCION, shifts routing control to the edge, creating optimization, performance, and fairness challenges. This dissertation designs high-performance multipath applications for PANs. Through experimental deployments, we contribute across three areas. For network optimization, making BitTorrent and IPFS path-aware boosted goodput by 48%. We also accelerated Brave browser loads and designed a stateless inter-domain multicast. For end-host performance, we bypassed processing bottlenecks using Xiondp and Hercules; the latter uses zero-copy processing to saturate intercontinental 100 Gbps links on standard hardware. Finally, addressing fairness and economics, we built Uncoupled Multipath Congestion Control (UMCC) for decentralized fairness, and our SAPEX-F framework proves cooperative behavior mitigates ISP economic risks. Collectively, these solutions prove PAN's barriers are solvable.
