Abstract: Der Sonicare AirFloss (SA) wurde hinsichtlich seiner Plaque- und Entzündungsreduktion getestet.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the Sonicare AirFloss (SA) due to its effect of reducing plaque and gingival inflammation. In this randomised, single-blinded, splitmouth designed study 69 subjects between the age of 18 and 35 (average 25 years, 68,1% f) used a defined manual toothbrush (Curaprox Ultrasoft 5460) over a four week period without using any interdental devices. On one section (test side) of the mouth the SA (filled with water) was additionally used once daily. At the beginning and after four weeks of use probing depths (ST), attachment loss (CAL), gingival bleeding index (GI) and plaque index (PI) were recorded. Furthermore the subjects estimated efficacy, handling, time needed for application and side effects in comparison to dental floss (DF) and interdental brush (IDB). GI and PI increased singnificantly on test and control side (p<0.0001). ST showed significantly better results on test side. CAL increased significantly on control side but not on test side, whereas test and control side did not differ significantly. SA was estimated by 54.2% of the subjects as less effective in comparison to DF/IDB, whereas handling was found to be easier (81.4%), time needed for application less (78.8%) and side effects equally common (50.8%). In young adults SA has a positive effect on ST in comparison to none interdental cleaning.
