By developing a contextualist approach to understanding, the book presents an innovative contribution to the contemporary debates on understanding in epistemology and philosophy of science. Evolving around the contextualist nature of understanding, the theory is capable of representing ascriptions of understanding both in everyday and scientific contexts as well as ascriptions of different types of understanding (objectual understanding, interrogative under-standing). The conceptual core of the theory evolves around the thesis that the nature of un-derstanding is linked to problem-solving and that ascriptions of understanding highlight com-petent problem-solvers. A permissive conception of what counts as ‚problems‘ is key to describing different types of understanding and contexts of ascription. Besides focusing on problem-solving, the account also highlights the close relationship between understanding and knowledge by acknowledging that reliable problem-solving requires relevant background knowledge.
