Abstract: Kolander, R.: Variability of the water and material cycle in the Lake Gardno Drainage Basin from 1996to 2005 (Wolin Island, northwestern Poland). – Hercynia N. F. 43 (2010): 189 –201.The variability of chemical composition in water circulation is described, based on nine years of researchin young glacial forested experimental catchment on the Polish Baltic coast. The research issummed up in a diagram showing variations in mineralisation and chemical composition of the watercycle system. There are three specific hydrochemical groups in the coastal area. The first one consistsof three elements which are directly related – precipitation, throughfall and stemflow. This group representsspheres that are strongly influenced by atmospheric deposition (anthropogenic immissions andsea aerosols). Because of the low mineralisation and insufficient buffer system (which works only in thevegetation season) in this group are characteristic seasonal fluctuations and low pH values. The secondgroup represents the throughflow and determines the processes at the boundary of the atmosphere andbiosphere to the lithosphere. The third group represents the lithosphere and consists of the surface waterand two groundwater levels. Their chemistry is mainly characterised by long-term chemical denudationprocesses in sediments rather than the atmospheric delivery. This group has high mineralisation rates andneutral to alkaline pH values, that means a high buffering capacity for acids. Environmental monitoringwill be continued in the area.Key words: water cycle system, transformation of precipitation, mineralisation, throughfall, stemflow
