Poly(ester imides) are used as coating material on copper windings in electric motors. In operation, thermal stress leads to their thermal degradation and restricts their usability. Aim of this thesis was the development of a sensor system to detect the aging condition of poly(ester imides). Therefore, their thermal degradation was investigated to identify released degradation products. Alcohols were found to be the main degradation products. Thus, alcohol sensitive, trifluoroacetyl functionalized stilbenes were synthesized and their activation kinetics towards different nucleophilic analytes were tested in solution experiments. The detection of sensor activation was done by fluorescence spectroscopy, as the sensor emission maximum was shifted to shorter wavelengths during activation. Finally, the sensor molecules were embedded within the poly(ester imides) and their suitability was demonstrated using different activation conditions.
