The metallocene catalyzed synthesis of propene/1-olefin copolymers is an important key to polymeric materials with a great variety of properties ranging from thermoplastics to elastomers. The different influence of the incorporation of 1-octene and 4-methylpentene-1 in the growing polypropene chain on the molecular, thermal and mechanical properties of the resulting copolymers is shown in detail. The copolymerization behavior of an isospecific and an aspecific metallocene catalyst for manufacturing propene/1-olefine copolymers is compared. A second subject of this work was the synthesis of polypropene graft copolymers with uniform side chain length and their use as compatibilizers in polypropene/polystyrene blends. In order to prepare well-defined graft copolymers the macromonomer route was chosen in which polystyrene side chains prepared separately using living anionic polymerization's technique with a functional initiator. The following metallocene catalyzed copolymerization of Alpha-norbornenyl-polystyrene macromonomers with propene leads to graft structures with various polystyrene content. The influence of these polypropene-graft-polystyrene copolymers on the mechanical properties and on the morphology of the polypropene/polystyrene blends was investigated. As a result a dependency of the compatibilizing efficiency on the side chain length and the side chain number was found.eng
