The combination of magnetic microscopy and spectroscopy is presented in this thesis as a method for the quantitative investigation of local magnetic properties. Photoelectron emission spectroscopy (PEEM) in combination with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) in x-ray absorption allows the element-selective local spectroscopy of magnetic surfaces and layered systems. The secondary electron distribution at the sample surface is used in PEEM to create a magnified image of the sample surface by an electrostatic electron optics. The image intensity can be regarded as a measure of the local x-ray absorption cross section. Scanning the photon energy in steps and acquiring PEEM images of the sample for both helicities at each energy step results in a micro-spectroscopic data set which contains the full spectroscopic information inherent to XMCD at each image pixel. This ultimate combination of XMCD and PEEM is named "Imaging magnetic microspectroscopy". A procedure for the automatic analysis of full-image microspectroscopic data by so-called sum-rules is presented, which yields the element-selective spin and orbital magnetic moments. It is applied for the investigation of the magnetic phases of ultrathin Fe layers sandwiched between Co and Ni layers on Cu(001) and for the investigation of the spin reorientation transition in Co/Ni/Cu(001) bilayers. The spin and orbital magnetic moment of three different magnetic phases of Fe in Ni/Fe/Co/Cu(001) trilayers, namely two phases with high spin moment at low (<4 ML) and high (>11 ML) Fe thickness, as well as one phase with low spin moment at intermediate Fe thicknesses, have been determined as a function of Fe and Ni thickness. In the latter phase, the depth-averaged spin moment exhibits a change upon varying the Ni overlayer thickness in a certain range. This could be related to an antiparallel magnetic copupling of the Co and Ni magnetic moments across the Fe layer. The easy axis of magnetization in Co/Ni bilayers changes from perpendicular to the film plane to parallel to the film plane upon increasing the Co thickness or decreasing the Ni thickness. The sum-rule analysis of imaging magnetic microspectroscopy data shows that the Ni orbital moment exhibits a characteristic change at the spin-reorientation transition. This is explained by the correlation between the anisotropy of the orbital moment and the magneto-crystalline anisotropyeng
