In this work, the transverse particle motion as well as the heat transfer in rotary drums with flights are investigated. In the first part of the work, the transverse particle motion in a rotary drum (D = 500 mm, L = 150 mm) with flights is analyzed. Videos of the par-ticle motion in the rotary drum are converted into single images and evaluated. This allows the surfaces relevant for heat transfer to be determined. Three approaches are defined for this purpose: the inner surface of the particle curtain assuming individual spheres, and two outer surfaces of the particle curtain assuming a plate, each with a different definition of the surface properties (smooth or with spheres on the surface). In the second part of the work, the contact heat transfer in a flighted rotary drum (D = 0.5 m, L = 1.76 m) without inclination to the horizontal is investigated in batch mode. During transient heating, the temperatures of the rotary drum and flight wall, the bulk material and the gas phase are measured by means of type K thermocouples in different radial and axial positions and continuously over the entire circumference. U-sing the temperature profiles over time and the heat transfer areas determined in the first part of the paper, energy balances are established, from which the contact heat transfer coefficients are obtained. A model for contact heat transfer in rotary drums without flights is known from the literature. A comparison of the model values with the experimental values shows good agreement and that the model can also be applied in rotary kilns with flights. The convective heat transfer at the particle curtain is addressed in the third part of the paper and analysed in the pilot plant mentioned above. The heated system is flown through in batch mode by ambient air drawn in. During transient cooling, the tempera-ture curves over time are determined while varying the operating parameters (rotatio-nal speed, filling degree, volumetric flow rate), the flight design parameters (flight length ratio, number of flights), and the material parameters (particle diameter, heat penetration coefficient). When balancing the heat flows, three approaches are distin-guished for convective heat transfer at the particle curtain. According to the first ap-proach, the particle curtains are flowed through and each particle is in contact with the gas. This is considered as heat transfer at single spheres flowed over. Approaches two and three assume an externally flowed particle curtain, which is considered as a flo-wed-over plate. The two approaches differed in the assumption of smooth and spheri-cal plate surfaces, respectively. However, the convective heat transfer coefficient de-pends on the chosen approach in terms of heat transfer area. The overflowed sphere model is in good agreement with the measured values for some cases, but only for large particle diameters. The model of the overflowed plate is also not in sufficient agreement with all measured values. This is due to the fact that in both models, apart from the volumetric flow rate and the particle diameter, no other parameter dependen-cies are included. In order to be able to represent all investigated parameter influences on the convective heat transfer at the particle curtain, a parametric regression analysis is performed. From this, a mathematical model with good correlation to the measured values is developed and presented.
