This dissertation deals with the honing process of thermally coated cylinder liner sur-faces. At first, the elastic deformations of a crankcase by machining forces are considered. These deformations result in shape deviations caused by different stiffnesses of the cylinder. Using the finite element method, the normal forces acting on the honing stone are determined and afterwards the cylinder deformations are calculated. Subsequently, the simulated results are verified by appropriate ex-periments and measurements. In a further step, the acting forces on the honing stone are logged by suitable measuring techniques and calibrated with corresponding machine data, so that in future cutting force measurements can be executed on the basis of the calibrated data. Furthermore, the cause-and-effect interrelations between the input and output parameters for the cutting materials diamond and silicon carbide are determined by regression models. Though, the influences of the honing stone specification and the machine parameters on the target parameters (machining forces and surface roughness) are investigated for the diamond material. For the cutting material silicon carbide, used for the first time in the case of thermally coated cylinder liner surfaces, the problem of high main-time variation is solved in the finish process by appropriate parameterization. For the last process step, the force-controlled smoothing with silicon carbide, the influences of the machine parameters on the characteristics of the finished surface are analyzed. Finally, on the basis of the findings of this work, optimization measures for the design of future honing processes will be presented.
