The dissertation deals with the Lower and Middle Buntsandstein (Uppermost Permian to Lower Triassic) of the eastern part of the German basin. The aim of the work is a detailed correlation of the Buntsandstein sediments between the Polish and German sub-basins. The investigated area extends from eastern Thuringia to western and central Poland, and includes 10 outcrops and 42 boreholes (3 core sections). The main topics of the work are a high-resolution lithostratigraphy, a facies and depositional cycles interpretation, as well as a sequence stratigraphy by means of the base-level method. The Lower Buntsandstein is subdivided into two formations, the Calvörde Formation. and the Bernburg Formation, which correlate with almost the entire Polish Baltic Formation. In the investigated Polish boreholes the base of the Calvörde Formation is located 7 to 26 m above the Zechstein/Buntsandstein boundary. On the basis of the well-log interpretations, up to 11 oolite-horizons (α to λ) and up to 21 lithostratigraphic small-scale cycles are established within the two formations. The Middle Buntsandstein is subdivided into four formations: the Volpriehausen , Detfurth , Hardegsen, and Solling Formations. These are correlated with the Polish Pommern and Polczyn Formations. The exact correlation depends on the paleogeographic location in the Polish sub-basin. The Middle Buntsandstein is subdivided into 12 lithostratigraphic small-scale cycles. The sedimentary environment of the Lower Buntsandstein is interpreted as a system of playa lakes. The sediments were deposited within one base-level cycle of large-scale. Two base-level cycles of medium-scale are distinguished in the western part of the investigated area. The Middle Buntsandstein basin is characterized by a belt of fluvial facies at its borders and by brackish-lacustrine facies in the central part. Depositional cycles are recognized in both types of facies. Acritarchs, prasinophytes, foraminifers and glauconite occurrence demonstrate marine influences in the basin. Small-scale and medium-scale base-level cycles are distinguished in the Middle Buntsandstein, of which the medium-scale cycles can be regionally correlated. Four to six complete, and one incomplete, base-level cycles of medium-scale are distinguished in the investigated area (boreholes: Halle-Süd 1/64, Gorzów Wielkopolski IG1, Konary IG1).
