The essential trace element selenium (Se) is, as a component of selenoproteins, involved in various physiological processes, e.g. the maintenance of the cellular redox homeostasis. In the literature, the role of Se in the prevention of tumors and the development of metabolic diseases is controversially discussed. In this work the influence of different Se compounds and concentrations on energy metabolism and the antioxidative capacity in the murine liver (I), on the murine colon proteome (II) and on maintaining the mucosal balance using the example of GPx2 -KO mouse (III) was investigated. In addition, potential mechanisms of pro-oxidative Se compounds with regard to anti-carcinogenic effects in a murine melanoma cell line were shown (IV). Overall, the results indicate different influences of different Se compounds as well as Se concentrations used.eng
