The growth, magnetic properties and interface effects of ultrathin films of Fe and Fe3O4 on BaTiO3 substrates have been investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. In Fe ultrathin films, the magnetism evolves through three regions, a non-ferromagnetic region, an intermediate ferromagnetic region and a saturation region. Direction dependence of magnetic properties in Fe ultrathin films reveals an in-plane spin reorientation transition (SRT) at 6.7 MLE from the [110] to the [100] direction of Fe. Orbital magnetic moments show an enhancement compared to bulk values resulting in increased orbital to spin moment ratios. This hints to a spin-orbit coupling driven interface anisotropy as a possible reason for the SRT. Annealing of Fe films to 973 K results in the formation of ordered, directional Fe nanoislands of about 150 nm diameter. The coercivity of the nanoislands is found to be higher than that of the flat film and the magnetization is lower, which suggests the presence of complex magnetic structures. Investigations of the magnetic properties of Fe3O4 films reveal an easy axis rotated by 45° compared to bulk.eng
