Biochar systems are defined by the use of carbonized biomass for soil amelioration and carbon sequestration. In the first part of this publication, the technical reliability, economical profitability and the greenhouse gas mitigation potential of different technologies for the carbonization of biomass (pyrolysis, gasification, hydrothermal carbonization and flash carbonization) is analyzed within a literature review. In the second part of the thesis, the influence of biochar application on the albedo of agricultural soils and the climate mitigation potential of biochar systems is quantified. In this context, the climate impact of biogenic CO2-emissions caused by the production of biochar is considered as well. An assessment of the efficiency of a patented thermal process for the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) from carbonaceous wood gasification residues concludes this dissertation.eng
