When nanoparticles interact with lipo- or polymersomal membranes, specific localization of nanoparticles (NPs) within the membrane is strongly determined by their hydrophobicity. This thesis investigates the specific interaction and location of polymer functionalized CdSe NPs within a hybrid lipid/polymer membranes utilizing monolayer and bilayer techniques. The synthesis of (α,ω)- telechelic polyisobutylenes (PIBs) bearing different functional chain ends is described. Thus, on one side a phosphine oxide ligand was attached (through which the polymer is attached to the surface of NPs), whereas the other chain end is functionalized with either hydrogen bonding moieties (thymine/2,4-diaminotriazine), a long ethylene oxide chain (PEO) or Rhodamine-B (to ensure easy microscopic visualization of the NPs). By functionalizing the NP surface with either hydrophobic, amphiphilic or hydrophilic ligands using the grafting to approach, their specific localization in hybrid lipid/polymer membranes was studied.
