Elastomer composites have an outstanding position in our daily live as well as in industrial applications. It is possible to adjust the properties according to the application via blending, variation of the crosslinking chemicals, plasticizer and stabilizer and especially the addition of filler. A novel approach in the thesis represents the use of foamed borosilicate glass particles as filler to modify the properties of the elastomer composites. With regard to the EU directive 2004/73/EG, whereby zinc oxide is classified as harmful for aquatic organisms, and hence the level of zinc oxide in elastomeric systems should be reduced, the thesis is focused to zinc modified borosilicate glass and its influence on the vulcanization behavior and resulting properties of elastomers. The influence of the zinc modified borosilicate glass particles is caused by the formation of a chemical complex with the accelerator and the decomposition products, respectively. The comparative discussion of the influence of unmodified and modified borosilicate glass particles on vulcanization behavior and final elastomer properties shows that borosilicate glass particles are generally suitable as carrier of functionalizing groups for elastomer modification.
