Two techniques of airway management, the laryngeal mask and the endotracheal tube are compared in this work in terms of management, time of anesthesia and possible complications in 549 elective ophthalmological operations. The demographic data and the distribution of the eye operations were comparable in the ITN- and LMA-groups. The time of anesthesia induction and emergence were significantly longer in the ITN-group. In the ITN-group a higher dose of propofol was administered, the use of muscle relaxants was high, the remifentanil dose was comparable. The intraoperative hypertension was more frequently reported in the ITN-group, the bradycardia and the postoperative hypertension and PONV occurred equally frequently. The experience of the anesthetist influences the choice of the airway management. It has been shown that anesthesia with the LMA can be performed as safely and adequately as with an ETT.eng
