The maize inbred line B73 forms complex blends of volatiles that consist mainly of sesquiterpenes. While some of the volatiles are constitutively formed most are released after the plant is damaged by a herbivor. The enzyme class responsible for the formation of volatile terpenes are terpene synthases. In maize, most of the herbivor-induced sesquiterpenes are produced by the multiproduct terpene synthase TPS10 which is active in the leaves of herbivore-damaged leaves. This work focused on elucidating the reaction mechanism of the major multiproduct enzyme TPS10.
