Elite biathlon : an interdisciplinary approach to unravel the intricate links between biological, psychological and social factors determining biathlon performance

Abstract

Biathlon verbindet mit Skilanglauf in der freien Technik und Biathlonschießen zwei anspruchsvolle und sehr unterschiedliche Aufgaben. Mit dem Ziel, Biathlonleistung zu erklären und vorherzusagen, standen in der Vergangenheit sowohl biologische als auch psychologische Determinanten im Mittelpunkt der wissenschaftlichen Forschung, wobei diese meist isoliert untersucht wurden. Hinzu kommt, dass ein möglicher Einfluss des sozialen Kontextes auf die Biathlonleistung bisher weitgehend vernachlässigt wurde. Ziel der vorliegenden Dissertation ist es somit, einen Beitrag zum aktuellen Verständnis von Biathlonleistung zu leisten, indem interdisziplinäre Brücken geschlagen und insbesondere der Einfluss sozialer Aspekte auf die Biathlonleistung untersucht werden. Die Ergebnisse der empirischen Studien stellen erste Schritte eines ganzheitlichen Forschungsansatzes dar und unterstreichen die Bedeutung des sozialen Kontextes, da dieser die Leistung im Biathlon zu beeinflussen scheint.

Biathlon combines the challenging, yet remarkably different tasks of cross country skiing in free technique and rifle shooting. With the aim of understanding, explaining and predicting biathlon performance, biological determinants as well as psychological aspects have been in the focus of scientific research in the past and have mostly been examined in isolation rather than in conjunction. In addition, the complex sport of biathlon includes social context that has mostly been neglected so far. Consequently, the dissertation project strives to contribute to the current understanding of biathlon performance by building interdisciplinary bridges and focusing on the impact of social context on biathlon performance. Results of three empirical studies represent first steps to apply a holistic approach and highlight the need to focus on social context as this seems to affect both skiing and shooting performance in elite biathlon.
