The Pollen ovule ratio is an important flower-biological and mating-ecological parameter that shows an enormous interspecific variability, ranging from a few to millions of pollen grains per ovule. The present thesis is the first work that attempts to explain the interspecific variation in pollen ovule ratios by analysing large numbers of species with help of the comparative method while including information on the phylogeny of the species under study. This approach seemed reasonable since I did not only want to know which factors govern pollen ovule ratios among current species but also if correlation between pollen ovule ratios and other traits are the result of evolutionary history. At first, I wanted to test two predictions from an application of sex allocation theory, which predicts that pollenovule ratio scales positively with seed size, and negatively with pollen size. The results of the analyses were in line with the prediction for the relationship between pollen ovule ratio and seed size but not for the relationship between pollen ovule ratio and pollen size. The correlation found between pollen size and pollen ovule ratio was spurious, mediated by pollen number. There were similar ties between pollen ovule ratio, seed size and seed number, but the seed size/number trade off and the correlation between seed number and pollen ovule ratio could not account for all the variation in pollen ovule ratios. Drawing from these results, it seemed reasonable to propose that while sex allocation to female function influences pollen ovule ratios, there is also room for other factors to be considered. Consequently, I studied the effect of two further variables that have been invoked to explain the wide range in pollen ovule ratios: pollination efficiency and habitat disturbance. Results from comparative analyses suggest that pollination efficiency in the form of pollination type influences the pollen ovule ratio, even after accounting for the effect of seed mass. Within habitat disturbance types, however, variation in pollen-ovule ratio is very large and a difference between disturbed and undisturbed habitats was not found. These results suggest that the tested mathematical model provides the basis for understanding interspecific variation in pollen-ovule ratios but that other factors like pollination efficiency govern numbers and sizes of pollen and seed and thus have repercussion on the pollen-ovule ratio itself.eng
