This work studies the macroscopic and microscopic entropy of supersymmetric black hole solutions of four-dimensional supergravity and superstring theories with N = 2 supersymmetry. We show in particular that both entropies coincide only if a particular class of higher curvature terms is taken into account in the macroscopic computation. This modifies the macroscopic entropy in two ways: First the black hole solution is modified explicitly. For the entropy only the near horizon asymptotics is relevant, which is computed using the 'superconformal formulation' of N = 2 supergravity. Second the definition of macroscopic entropy has to be modified in presence of higher curvature terms: the Bekenstein-Hawking area law is replaced by a modified formula proposed by Robert Wald. In addition we show that the transformation properties of the entropy under T- and S-duality agree with the predictions of string theory. The paper has introductory chapters, which provide background knowledge about black holes, supergravity and superstring theory.
