The history of mathematics teaching at the University of Wittenberg in first decades of its existence turns out to be rewarding, complex and not only of local or limited significance, provided the still available historical sources are exactly examined and thoroughly investigated. The present thesis addresses these problems and aims at developing essential thoughts about this topic that proves to be both interesting and significant for the history of science. The first part deals with the representation of the state of mathematics teaching at the Wittenberg College in first decades of its existence. One can surely take it for granted that at that time the enormous progress of mathematics teaching - including the establishment of two mathematics chairs in the first half of the 16th century - played an overall important role. But also the inclusion of application-oriented lectures into the curriculum as well as the contentrelated and methodological conclusions is essential points characterizing the mathematics of Wittenberg and generating an individual and specific, but not only regionally significant picture for the understanding of university education of that time. The second part of the thesis focuses at the mathematics professor Ambrosius Rhodius of Wittenberg. We consider his teaching approach and use his example to analyze the approach to mathematics teaching, i.e. methodology at Wittenberg University in the early 17th century. Ambrosius Rhodius proves to be a remarkable scholar of the early 17th century who distinguished himself above all in the field of theory and methodology of mathematics teaching. His methodological considerations reflect a depth of insight that makes them interesting even today.
