The pollution free low pressure plasma technology has become in the last years a well known and used method to activate surfaces of plastics. The occurring discussion around the extension of its spectrum of use led to the task of this work. The usual application of the low pressure plasma technology for the treatment of films, fabrics and semi-finished material of all kinds is extended by the plasma treatment by plastic powder, in particular by polyethylene. The plasma treatment was executed in especially designed drum recipient, which is equipped with lateral bars. These enable on the one hand a continuous circulation of the powder in the center of the process chamber and on the other hand an improvement of the reproductibility of the plasma treatment. For the increase of the modification effect further a continuous speed controlling device of the drum recipient was enabled. For the plasma polymerization the system was extended by a special construction. The Monomer is shifted at double coat tanks into the vaporous status. Over temperaturable high-grade steel lines it is led in defined quantity into the process chamber. Three LDPE types were used as raw material. The disperse surface character of these LDPE types was modified on the one hand by plasma activation and on the other hand by plasma polymerization. The individual analysis methods (ESCA, FTIR, surface tension, adhesive strength) showed that they are suitable by plasma processes for the problems of the proof caused by functional groups on powder surfaces. From these investigations it follows that the incorporation of the functional groups and thus the adjustment of the required surface properties can be controlled by the variation of the process parameters directly and adapted to the application. The process times indicated in the literature for the plasma activation of powdered materials from 4 to 6 hours could be drastically reduced with the presented investigations. In the used rotary barrel system became 50 - 100 g polyethylene powders already according to short process times (3 min) activates uniform at the surface. This system operates thereby clearly more economically, than at present from the literature well-known plasma devices.
