From 1993 to 2001 investigations on Isopoda were carried out within open-cast post-mining landscapes and their surroundings of Saxony-Anhalt. Species-lists taken from 171 locations are evaluated and characteristic species of seven investigated habitat types are shown. Currently 58163 animals and 11 species of Isopoda are known from open-cast post-mining landscapes and surroundings. These are 44 % of the known species in Saxony-Anhalt. Investigations on habitat preferences of four different Isopoda-species (Armadillidium vulgare, Oniscus asellus, Porcellio scaber and Trachelipus rathkii) were carried out from 1999 to 2000 in the laboratory. Under these conditions (+18°C and 12L/12D artificial photoperiod) preferences of light, temperature, humidity, subsoil, cover and rivalry were tested. The dissertation gives information about the distribution of the recorded species in different habitat types of open-cast post-mining landscapes and surroundings in Central Germany. It makes remarks on the habitat preferences of recorded Isopoda-species. Finally the importance of the different habitat types for the Isopoda species is discussed. Trachelipus rathkii is typical for dry grasslands and less vegetated grounds. Most important are the dense vegetated grasslands and the forests. Characteristic species of dense vegetated grasslands are: Trachelipus rathkii, Armadillidium vulgare and Porcellio scaber. Armadillidium vulgare, Porcellio scaber, Oniscus asellus and Philoscia muscorum are characteristic forest species.
