How people deal with ridicule and being laughed at is described by individual differences in gelotophobia (fear of being laughed at), gelotophilia (joy in being laughed at), and katagelasticism (joy in laughing at others). This thesis examined their role in interpersonal relationships. In Study I, I tested whether the dispositions can be accurately perceived by strangers from short textual self-descriptions. There was robust agreement among judges and with self-reports and diary data across two studies (N = 218 & 132). Study II examined the intra- and interpersonal associations between the dispositions and indicators of relationship satisfaction among 154 couples. Finally, I examined romantic attachment (Studies IIIa [247 individuals and 154 couples] and IIIb [531 individuals]) and romantic jealousy (Study IV; 228 couples). I found that each disposition relates differently and uniquely with relationship indicators. Implications are discussed.
