Abstract: Die Arbeit liefert neue Erkenntnisse zum anaeroben in-situ-Abbau niederchlorierter Kohlenwasserstoffe, explizit dem Monochlorbenzol(MCB)-Abbau.
This study provides new insights into the anaerobic in situ biotransformation of the lower chlorinated hydrocarbons with focus on the monochlorobenzene (MCB) degradation. The ubiquitous groundwater pollutant MCB seemed to persist and under anoxic conditions. But MCB may be subject to microbial transformation via oxidation or reductive dechlorination. Bio-geochemical transformation processes were investigated in laboratory microcosms and the gained knowledge was implemented in an integrative approach to evaluate the MCB in situ biotransformation (constructed model wetland). For the first time evidences were provided for microbial reductive dechlorination of MCB to benzene as well as the direct oxidation of MCB under nitrate and iron reducing conditions, in anaerobic groundwater derived laboratory microcosms.Decreasing MCB concentrations (< 90 %) in the planted model wetlandswere observed due to geochemical conditions and gradients, whereas iron and sulphate reduction were relevant redox processes. It takes an integrative research approach to demonstrate in situ degradation processes of environmental contaminants.
