Meiosis is a crucial process for reproduction in eukaryotes. Arabidopsis meiosis is tolerant to loss of H3K9me2. However, it is unclear whether removing H3K9me2 is required for meiosis. In this study, I found that histone demethylases IBM1 and JMJ27 are required to remove H3K9me2 from meiotic genes, including ZIP4 and SHOC1. PDS5 proteins, the cohesin cofactors, act downstream of IBM1 and JMJ27 to activate meiotic gene expression. Besides, I also found that IBM1 and JMJ27 are required for pollen wall formation.
