One thriving and simple technique to produce green ceramic bodies is the Freeze casting technology, which is based on phase separation of water based ceramic slurries through freezing. By using Freeze-casting it is possible to obtain highly porous materials with tailor-made pore structure, pores complex geometry and explicit porosity as well. The pore structure is the negative image of the ice crystals size and morphology. The aim of this work is to evaluate the main factors which are responsible for the evolution of the microstructure during freezing. Nucleation and growth of the ice crystals are considered as fundamental processes to control the micro structural parameters. Depending on the properties of the original slurries and on the freezing conditions the porosity characteristics can be varied in a wide range. It is then of particular importance to control the number of nuclei and to adjust the effective temperature gradients in order to prepare ceramic bodies with the intended micro structural parameters. This is shown by experimental data. In this paper the basics of ice crystallization and pore formation are discussed.
