The surface modification of polypropylene (PP) is inevitable in order to produce an adhesive connection with copper. The low pressure plasma treatment (both high frequency and microwave excitation) represents a central aspect. The plasma gases oxygen, nitrogen and helium were used. In addition used for the system polypropylene-copper (PP-Cu) polymeric intermediate layers were. Beside the intrisically conductive polymer polythiophen (PT) was this the diaminocyclohexane (DACH), which was deposited by a plasma polymerization process. The metallization with copper took place by the vacuum evaporation and in addition by electroplating (however only the subtrates coated with polythiophene). The main focus of this work was the analysis of the surface modifications (by contact angle measurement, AFM, XPS and SEM) and the determination and evaluation of the bonding strength. For this the pull-off test was used. The investigations of the compound PP-PT-Cu resulted, that only with a strongly roughen polypropylene surface a sufficiently high strength could be obtained. On the other side the use of the DACH as polymeric intermediate layer made possible an adhesive metallization of the nonpolar PP, whereby without a graining of the substrate surface could be done. The pull-off strength amounted max. 4,2 N/mm2 subject to the plasma treatment and the parameters of the plasma polymerization. Beside an adhesion break (in the boundary layer PP / DACH) also partly a coherence break (in the polymeric intermediate layer) was determined in this compound. This case and the high strength let assume that between polypropylene and diaminocyclohexane physical and also chemical interactions exist.
