„… noch zu einigem brauchbar…“ - Die ‚Entdeckung‘ des ‚geistig Behinderten‘ mit der Psychiatrie des beginnenden 19. Jahrhunderts

Abstract

Durch Beschreibung des diskursiven Feldes der Frühphase der Psychiatrie zu Beginn des 19. Jh. wird eine Neukontexualisierung der Anfänge der Heilpädagogik vorgenommen. Die „Entdeckung“ des ‚geistig behinderten‘ Menschen als ‚Forschungsgegenstand‘ innerhalb der Psychiatrie des 19. Jh. wird dabei zu einem Synonym für die Legitimation und Behauptung von Wissensansprüchen ebenso wie sie einen Versuch der Eigenkonturierung einer sich etablierenden Wissenschaft im Gefüge zu einer anderen darstellt. Der „Blödsinnige“ avanciert dabei zu einer Brückenfigur zwischen zwei Diskursen – dem psychiatrischen und dem heilpädagogischen. Eine Analyse psychiatrischer Lehrbücher zeigt, wie der „Blödsinnige“ im sich konstituierenden Feld der Psychiatrie zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts wahrgenommen wurde und ob bzw. inwieweit Wissensansprüche ein ‚Feld der Wissenskonkurrenz‘ eröffneten, die womöglich Nachwirkungen bis zum heutigen Verhältnis von Psychiatrie und Heilpädagogik zeitigen.

The description of the psychiatric discourse at the beginning of the 19th century provides new insight into the early stage of therapeutic education as a new discipline developing on the discovery of the mentally handicapped as a new research object. The idea of the mentally handicapped brings together two different discourses: the psychiatric and the therapeutic-educational. Analysis of psychiatric textbooks reveals the perception of the mentally handicapped as part of the psychiatric discipline at the beginning of the 19th century. Further this kind of analysis shows to what extent there existed competing ways of answering the same question, regarding disciplinary tensions that might well continue their influence on the relationship between psychiatry and therapeutic education up to the present day.
