Meningioma (most common intracranial tumor) generate, like the most tumours, energy by using the anaerobe glycolysis (Warburg effect) and which consequently results in a higher amount of the metabolite methylglyoxal (MGO). This dicarbonyl is known to react with amino groups, thereby building advanced glycation end products (AGEs). This reaction is called glycation. In elder people, it is known that AGEs are increasingly accumulate. To investigate the effects of glycation in meningioma cells there were used the benign cell line BEN- MEN-1 and the malign cell line IOMM-Lee. While this study was shown, that glycation leads to increased invasive behaviour in benign meningioma, whereas in malign meningioma cells were observed opposite effects. Additionally, glycation leads to changes in expression of sialyltransferases, which were known for direct or indirect influences in tumour development.
