Macroporous silicon is fabricated via a photo-assisted electrochemical etching process. It is a flexible method for preparing ordered porous structures within two or even three dimensions. For applications in materials science it was shown that in combination with atomic layer deposition the shape of such templates can be reproduced into different materials. The main focus of the work was the application of macroporous silicon as a photonic crystal. For this purpose the etching process was transferred to sub-micrometer lattice constants. Due to physical limits the obtained pore shape and homogeneity is very sensitive on material parameters. With the help of theoretical calculations an optimized set of parameters was found for a lattice constant of 700 nm. Furthermore, a three-dimensional photonic crystal was realized having a stop band at a wavelength of 1.5 µm. For the optical characterization of photonic crystals their dispersion properties were studied. The dispersion relation of a three-dimensional photonic crystal made of macroporous silicon was calculated. The analysis showed that such a photonic crystal can be used to refract light negatively in terms of Snell's law. As an experimental proof of the refraction properties an experiment was designed which is capable of measuring the beam shift induced by the photonic crystal for transmitted light. This beam shift is determined by the refraction properties of the photonic crystal. With this setup the negative refraction could be experimentally verified in close agreement with the theoretical findings. Furthermore, it was shown that the dispersion properties of the photonic crystal can be used to realize photonic applications as for example spectroscopic or refraction-compensating devices.eng
