The present thesis is devoted to the study of the Lp-theory of a class of quasilinear parabolic scalar integrodifferential equations of second order with nonlinear boundary conditions. Such equations appear in a variety of applied problems. Important applications are nonlinear viscoelasticity and the heat ow in materials with memory. The results available in the literature seem to be restricted to the special case with homogeneous boundary conditions. Under appropriate assumptions on the nonlinearities and the initial data we prove existence and uniqueness of local (in time) strong solutions of the problems considered. The basic idea of the proof is to establish optimal regularity estimates of type Lp for an associated linear problem which allow us to reformulate the original problem as a fixed point equation in the desired regularity class. For a sufficiently small time-interval existence and uniqueness of a fixed point is then obtained with the aid of the contraction mapping principle. To make this approach work, it is crucial to find conditions on the inhomogeneities, in particular on the boundary data, which characterize unique solvability of the linearized problem in the class of maximal regularity. Using localization and perturbation arguments, these conditions are derived from results on full and half space problems with constant coefficients. The latter follow from theorems on abstract Volterra equations, the study of which is one of the main parts of the work. Here we employ among others the inversion of the convolution, the Dore-Venni theorem, real interpolation, and the Mihklin multiplier theorem in the operator-valued version. The results obtained extend known theorems on maximal Lp-regularity of abstract evolution equations. The present work is further concerned with the basic equations of linear isotropic viscoelasticity with prescribed normal stress on the boundary. Here the main difficulty consists in the appearance of two independent kernels. Once more we characterize unique solvability of the problem in a certain space of maximal regularity of type Lp in terms of regularity conditions on the given data.
