Abstract: Pragmaticabilitiesarefundamentaltosuccessfullanguageuseandlearning.Individualdifferencesstudiescontributetounderstandingthepsychologicalprocessesinvolvedinpragmaticreasoning.Smallsamplesizes,insufficientmeasurementtools,andalackof theoretical precision have hindered progress, however. Three studies addressedthese challenges in three- to 5-year-old German-speaking children (N=228, 121female).Studies1and2assessedthepsychometricpropertiesofsixpragmaticstasks.Study3investigatedrelationsamongpragmaticstasksandbetweenpragmaticsandothercognitiveabilities.Thetaskswerefoundtomeasurestablevariationbetweenindividuals.Viaacomputationalcognitivemodel,individualdifferencesweretracedbacktoalatentpragmaticsconstruct.Thispresentsthebasisforunderstandingtherelationsbetweenpragmaticsandothercognitiveabilities.
