Abstract: Die Studie liefert eine diachrone Beschreibung der Textsorte Personal Weblog.
This study provides a diachronic description of the genre Personal Weblog. It combines approaches of text- and media linguistics as well as multimodality research in a dynamic genre model. By making use of the HTML-code of Blog sites, it develops an innovative methodology for multimodal analysis. The study is based on a diachronic corpus which spans 15 years from 1997 to 2012 and includes also examples of the very first Weblogs. Individual chapters focus on the communication form, certain multimodal characteristics as well as situational features and a wide range of functions of the Personal Weblog as a genre. These results are fused into stages of the development of the Personal Weblog and interpreted in the light of theories of language change such as the Invisible Hand Theory. Additionally, patterns of genre change such as migration, hybrid formation and genre split are described. The study is embedded in general considerations on stability and change of genres on the Internet.
