The influence of different electromagnetic radiation onto the biomass production and metabolic activity of C. vulgaris and S. obliquus (green algae) was investigated. Long exposure times to visible light lead to a significant increase in biomass production. The biochemical profile changed with longer photoperiod. With the exception of linoleic acid in C. vulgaris, volumetric yield of analyzed metabolites resulted in reducing light use efficiency with increasing photoperiod. The LED lighting (49:26:25 RGB) of C. vulgaris resulted in a higher biomass yield and an increased concentration of α-linolenic acid, astaxanthin and lutein. The results demonstrate an adaptation of the metabolism to the spectral composition and exposure time. No influence on biomass and metabolic activity could be detected by microwave radiation. Results of UV-A and UV-B-radiation indicates a reduction in cell number and changed fatty acid composition.
