Since their first mention liquid crystals developed from a scientific oddity to a ubiquitous part in modern life. Well known are the technical applications of liquid crystalline compounds in displays and control element assemblies. Because of their special physical properties, in recent years liquid crystalline compounds with a bent molecular shape became a major topic of liquid crystal research and take a high position from the scientific viewpoint. The chemical modification of bent-core mesogens directly influences the phase structures, resulting in unusual properties, e.g. ferro- resp. antiferroelectric behaviour or phase chirality, although the molecules are achiral. Hydrogen bond interactions are widespread and well studied molecular forces. It is known that these molecular interactions play an important role not only on the appearance but also on the stabilization of mesophases. Here the influence of hydrogen bonding interactions on the mesophase behaviour of bent-core mesogens will be shown. For this attempt a number of different mesogens based on bent-core structures including amide groups or a hydroxy group in ortho position to an azomethine group were synthesized. The investigations by means of polarizing microscopy, DSC, electrooptical experiments and X-ray scattering of these materials are discussed. Comparison with the corresponding ester derivatives resp. azomethine compounds without hydroxy groups proves the concrete influence of hydrogen bonding on the mesophase stability and mesophase type.
