In this thesis the model equations of mechanical systems subject to very strong potential or damping forces are considered and the numerical properties of an important class of time integration methods (Newmark-type methods) are analyzed within that setting. The limit case of infinite force terms leads to differential-algebraic systems of index 3 or 2 respectively such that the numerical analysis employs methods from that context. It is shown that for strongly damped systems the classical second order of the time integration methods is preserved on position and velocity level while this no longer holds in case of stiff mechanical systems. The theoretical findings are verified by means of a series of benchmark problems from the literature.
